The most severe potential impacts of the global heating for the UK have been mapped by experts, encompassing a scorching 4C jump in mean temperatures to a 6.5-foot increase in sea level. A separate possibility predicts a drop of 6C in temperature following the collapse of crucial Atlantic Ocean currents, which would massively disrupt agriculture and energy needs.

Possible Outcomes, Not Forecasts

These effects, a number of which are associated with critical climate thresholds, are viewed as unlikely but plausible. The researchers said that these models addressed a shortfall in planning that had left the UK not ready for catastrophic possibilities.

"The worst-case scenarios we have outlined are not forecasts, but they are plausible," commented the professor who led the analysis. "Britain has been making preparations without the frameworks to assess extreme possibilities. We've now given policymakers what they need to get ready for climate outcomes they pray never occur, but dare not dismiss."

A Spectrum of Extreme Weather Scenarios

A further series of worst-case scenarios sets out the possible scale of severe conditions between now and the year 2100. These indicate that thermometer readings could skyrocket in particular seasons by up to 6C higher than average, while precipitation could be three times typical amounts.

The likelihood of the extreme scenarios coming to pass could not be calculated due to a lack of certainty about what action will be implemented to tackle global heating and how the Earth's systems will respond. This analysis was likened to national security risk assessments or resilience checks for economic stability.

  • Severe Heating: Planetary heating exceeding 4C by 2100 could occur if emissions cuts collapses or if powerful amplifying effects like the Amazon basin perishing unleash its vast reserves of carbon. This would lead to extreme and prolonged heatwaves and droughts affecting the UK in summer.
  • AMOC Shutdown: A major ocean current, the AMOC, is losing strength and losing stability due to global heating. A complete failure beginning in 2030 would lead to a 6C cooling in the UK.
