The British tennis star earned the most important victory of his professional journey by coming back from a lost first set to overcome world No 1 Carlos Alcaraz in three hard-fought sets in the early stage of the prestigious indoor tournament.

Although he had before beaten Alcaraz on two prior meetings, this victory represents Norrie's maiden win over a sitting world number one.

"Massive. Extremely important for me," stated Norrie, who becomes the newest UK male player in history to defeat a world No 1. "Returning from a physical setback last year, I was defeated in the opening stage of qualies here. I just aimed to enjoy my performance in the second half of the year. To secure a victory like this, it's the biggest success of my career, my maiden triumph over the top player and arguably the most in-form competitor in the sport right now."

The British player, positioned 31st globally, also halted Alcaraz's dominant sequence of nine consecutive finals and 17 successive premier event successes, which represented the top run of results in the young champion's developing career.

Alcaraz appeared to be advancing smoothly to success at the start as he cruised through the opening set. Yet, Norrie gradually battled back into contention by executing with improved accuracy and dragging the Spanish opponent into lengthy, physical rallies. His persistent shot tolerance and reliability slowly left its mark.

For much of the contest, the world number one served well but he found it challenging to locate his rhythm with his rally strokes. The 22-year-old appeared notably struggling hitting his primary weapon, which has been the top weapon in the world for much of this year, haemorrhaging 29 mistakes off the forehand side and a combined of 54 mistakes. On the other side, the British player offered his opponent very few errors, maintaining his steadiness, fitness and power all match while performing well on serve and picking his spots to advance into the court and play aggressively.

Following battling for an extended period due to a significant arm issue and struggles with his form, the tennis professional fell as low as No 91 this year. Following appearances in the last eight at the grass-court major and the Roland Garros second week subsequently, this win further underlines the veteran's improvement as he seeks to make his way to the elite rankings and beyond. The Spanish sensation, notwithstanding his remarkable success, is still hasn't master how to display his top form on indoor courts.
