Forecasters are reporting a chilly commencement to the new year, with snow expected throughout a lot of the UK. Celebrants are being urged to wrap up as sub-zero temperatures are expected for New Year's Eve.

Hogmanay Plans Proceed Amid Forecasts

The Scottish capital's renowned Hogmanay events are expected to proceed, following last year's postponement. This comes despite yellow warnings for snow over northern Scotland.

"A cold New Year's Eve night for those out celebrating, so extra layers will be necessary," stated the Met Office.

Celebrations Under Clear but Frosty Skies

Across the UK, the weather is likely to be ideal for fireworks celebrations, with no rain and clear skies. Temperatures are forecast to be chilly, making warm wraps essential, as per forecasters.

Further north, skies will be cloudier, but this is not anticipated to impact visibility for viewing fireworks. "There is no expectation of low cloud, mist or murk, so you will likely be able to see fireworks, just not stars," remarked one forecaster.

Widespread Weather Alerts for Friday

Heading into Friday, snow alerts are in place across Northern Ireland and extending from Wales, across parts of the north-west, the West Midlands and reaching London and most of the south-east of England.

• Travelers should to plan for delays for journeys on the road.
• Disruptions and cancellations are expected on the transport network.

Readings Set to Fall Even More

Going into the new year, it will be "chilly no matter where you are," said forecaster Simon Partridge. Temperatures are forecast to plummet as wintry showers and strong winds are likely to hit the north of the country.

Approximately 10cm of snow could accumulate to have settled in some areas by Friday morning, potentially hitting 30cm on the most elevated routes and peaks.

Medical Alerts Issued

In addition, serious cold weather health warnings are in force for the north-east and north-west of England. These are expected to stay active until noon on 5 January, with readings likely to fall to between 3C and 5C.

The health agency said this signified the weather was likely to lead to notable consequences across health and social care services. This involves a potential rise in the fatality numbers among the elderly or unwell or those in the older age groups.

The advice for all is clear: to celebrate the new year in safely, dressing for the cold is absolutely paramount.
