Far-Right Former Congressman J.A. Kast Voted In as Chile's Next Leader.
Following a conclusive second-round vote, far-right candidate José Antonio Kast has secured the top job in Chile.
A Commanding Triumph
After more than 99% of votes tallied, Kast won 58.17% of the votes, defeating leftist contender Jeannette Jara, who obtained 41.83%.
This represents Kast's third presidency, having earlier been beaten by the sitting president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 final vote.
Agenda Built On Security and Immigration
Known for his strong Catholic views and praise for the rule of dictator Augusto Pinochet, Kast's platform was mostly built on promises to address growing insecurity and drastically curb immigration.
He consistently cited migrants, particularly the approximately 330,000 illegal individuals in Chile, for crime rates. During the campaign, he gave an ultimatum for them to leave before the inauguration or face removal.
His plans envisioned U.S.-style measures such as building camps, high walls, perimeter fencing, and increasing the armed forces presence on the northernmost border.
Amid a Broader Wave
Many observers view Kast's victory as fitting into a wider conservative wave in the region, coming after this year's political outcomes in countries like Ecuador, Bolivia, and Argentina.
However, other pundits also describe it as a part of the established alternation of power between left-wing and right governments since Chile's return to democracy in 1990.
Ruling Lacking a Solid Mandate
In spite of his decisive popular vote win, Kast does not command an overall majority in Congress, neither in the lower house nor the Senate, even if all rightwing parties are counted together.
This political landscape may hinder his agenda, including a promise to slash public spending by $6 billion within a year and a half—a measure for which he has yet to detailed specifics.
"We have numerous things about how a Kast government will look like that remain unclear because he has not explained how he will achieve them," commented a political science expert.
The analyst stated, "In terms of fiscal matters, it is highly probable we will see austerity policies associated with the right-wing. However the area with far less uncertainty is on law and order, because that has been his workhorse during the campaign."
