Groups also overwhelmed adjacent streets and tried to enter parliament, where the government had initially planned the open visitation.

Political Heritage and Ethnic Support

Although primarily recognized as an political challenger, Odinga served as senior minister in 2008 and also struck a political pact with the leader last year in a public service marked by shifting alliances.

He generated intense commitment among supporters, especially in his ethnic group based in the nation's western region, many of whom contend he was denied the nation's leadership by electoral fraud.
